Cannabidiol (CBD) is a safe and versatile molecule found in the flower of cannabis. This therapeutically potent compound directly influences our endocannabinoid system, which is present in the bodies of all mammals and helps regulate many of the body’s systems.
CB1 and CB2 are two primary receptors of our endocannabinoid system. CB1 receptors are mostly located in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 receptors are predominantly found in the peripheral organs and in the cells associated with the immune
Our bodies have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS). In fact, there are some who argue that every living creature with a nervous system has some type of ECS. This system is indicated in the modulation and regulation of stress, pain, memory, and mood. It also works directly with other systems in the body, including our immune system, to create balance in the body or homeostasis. There is some consensus in the medical world that many common ailments are due to Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome, or ECD.
Our bodies make naturally-occurring internal cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids, that interact with cannabinoid receptors, known as the CB1 and CB2 receptors, in our brain and body. Cannabis and hemp plants make phytocannabinoids, or plant-based cannabinoids. THC locks into CB1 receptors, primarily located in the brain. This locking-in is what results in users feeling euphoria, or high.
CBD is a naturally-occurring phytocannabinoid found in cannabis and hemp. Unlike THC, which can cause impairment, CBD may deliver incredible health benefits, but does not cause the user to feel the ‘high.’ Many people do report, however, feeling more calm and clear-headed as a result of using CBD.
Hemp and cannabis are the same plant! Hemp is a form of Cannabis Sativa L. with very low to no THC. According to the federal standards set in the 2018 Federal Farm Bill, hemp is defined as cannabis with THC levels below .3% THC.
“(1) HEMP.—The term ‘hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.
CBD-rich hemp can have percentages as high as 40% CBD.
CBD from hemp may be perfect for those who want to experience the benefits of cannabis, but don’t want the psychoactive impairment of THC.
CBD from hemp is the most widely-legal form of cannabis medicine. CBD from hemp is currently legal in all fifty states. Regulations are always changing, so be sure to check with your local and state laws.
